Opalescence Teeth Whitening Gel

If you’ve ever seen a commercial about teeth whitening before, chances are that it was about the Opalescence teeth whitening system. This is a professional teeth whitening product that can be used without the use of a bleaching light or laser during the whitening process. It can be used to speed the process up, but this is considered to be optional.

Opalescence Teeth Whitening Gel

The Opalescence gel is a hydrogen peroxide based whitening gel. This whitening solution consists of multiple components. These components are prepackaged individually and they are to be mixed by the person who is trying to whiten his/her teeth. They must be mixed at the time of application. This mixture cannot be sold premixed, because it is effective for only a very short while.

The Opalescence whitening gel is fairly aggressive, because it uses a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide. It is 38% to be exact. It has a pH value of 7. Oftentimes, peroxide concentrations of no higher than 3% are recommended. This particular gel is more than 10 times that concentration. It is to be used in a very careful manner, because it is possible to damage your enamel when using this gel for too long!

When this gel is used in combination with a bleaching light, then the standard dental light equipment known as a ‘curing’ light will do. The dentist uses the same light to cure white filling material.

The heat that the curing light will produce when it is targeted onto the gel that is applied to a tooth, will accelerate the whitening process. The curing light is designed to target one tooth at a time, so the dentist will be moving the light from one tooth to another during the treatment.

The manufacturer of the Opalescense teeth whitening gel recommends that the curing light targets one tooth for at most 30 seconds at one time. Over the coarse of the entire treatment, your teeth will all be targeted multiple times. Each tooth will have approximately 2 minutes worth of curing light exposure. When the dentist follows these directives, it is unlikely that you will ever feel any significant amount of heating in your mouth. The risk of being burnt is negligable.

Laser Teeth Whitening Results

The results you can expect from this treatment are the same as when you use home remedies for teeth whitening. The difference is that the dentist will achieve the results much quicker, while at home whitening kits are to be used over the timespan of a week or two.
