During a laser treatment, a gel containing carbamide peroxide will be applied to your teeth. This carbamide peroxide is actually just hydrogen peroxide together with some other chemicals to make sure the hydrogen peroxide is released slowly and gradually over a longer period of time. Because of the fact that carbamide peroxide works slower than just pure hydrogen peroxide, the laser is used to accelerate this process. When the laser is targeted onto the gel that is on your teeth, all of a sudden the chemicals start to react a little faster.
Your teeth will be whiter in less than an hour if all goes well. In that one hour, around 50% of the hydrogen peroxide is released into your teeth’s enamel, which contains the colory stains that you want to get rid of. The other 50% of the hydrogen peroxide is released in the hours after that.
These stains in your enamel consist of molecules that have a color. When the hydrogen peroxide gets to those colored molecules, it breaks them down into colorless byproducts. The result is that your enamel once again becomes transparant, allowing it to reveal the natural whiteness of your teeth.

When you go to a professional to have a treatment, the chances of you somehow sustaining damage from the whitening process are minimal. The laser itself never targets your actual body or the tissues in your mouth. It is aimed at the gel only. So under normal circumstances, you have absolutly nothing to fear from the laser.
